Caedite eos. Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius. ("Kill them all. For the Lord knoweth them that are His." Supposedly said when asked by a Crusader how to distinguish the Cathars from the Catholics.)

About This Quote

The Cathar Crusade was a crusade from the Western Church to destroy Catharism in Southern France. It was a major success for the Church, resulting in the mass execution of a large number of people. The Crusaders, in their march across Southern France, were said to have chanted "Kill them all, for the Lord knows them that are His." But there is no historical evidence that this was ever said by any Crusaders. In fact, it appears that this quote may have been invented in the 19th century when the French Revolution was in full swing and people wanted to justify their hatred of the aristocracy. The phrase does not appear in any of the primary sources from the time from when it supposedly occurred.
